Roads in Athlone due for resurfacing

As part of the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate’s regular
road maintenance programme, residents,
businesses and road users in the Athlone district are advised that road
resurfacing work will commence in Welcome Estate and Vanguard Estate. The work
is scheduled to start Wednesday, 12 April 2023, until 12 May 2023 between 07:30
and 17:00, Monday to Friday, weather permitting. Residents can expect an
increase in their regular travel times and a level of noise pollution during
this time.
The City plans to lay a new asphalt surface layer on the existing road surface, realign road kerbs and stormwater channels on the following identified roads:
- Yusuf Road, Alban Road and Fred Adams Road in Welcome Estate
- Blyvoor Street, Calcium Road, Minor Street, Uranium Street, Bronze Street and Ferrous Street in Vanguard Estate
To ease congestion, the affected roads will not be entirely closed. Instead, Stop/Go lane closures will be implemented. Road users are asked to adhere to the Traffic Accommodation Signage and posted speed limit in these specified areas. Upon completion, all the road-marking that existed before the resurfacing work will be reinstated.
Please note that:
• The abovementioned dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances
• Traffic moving in both directions will be affected
• Flag personnel will direct traffic through temporary detours around the work area
• Work areas will be demarcated to regulate traffic flow
• Vehicles parked in the road and obstructing the maintenance work, will be moved or towed
• Only lane closures (Stop/Go) at the work sections.
• We will not work on the inbound and outbound lanes at the same time.
Road users are urged to:
• Be cautious while work is under way
• Lower your speed
• Pay attention to road signs
• Be vigilant in and around the roadworks area
• Look out for uneven road surfaces
• Be mindful of the construction workers
• Factor in longer travel time
'I want to thank residents for their patience and support while this work is under way. Motorists should consider using alternative routes, if at all possible. But, rest assured that the resurfacing of these roads will benefit this community in the long term,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
